Karim Presents: Marcellus Pittman

Pittman has collaborated with virtually everyone worth their salt in contemporary Detroit, first coming to prominence with a bunch of Theo Parrish co-productions released across two 12?s on Parrish’s Sound Signature label in 1999 and 2002. He arrived at his own distinct sonic identity with the M. Pittman EP for Omar-S‘s FXHE label – unapologetically soulful and observant of the Chicago house tradition but unusually stripped, raw and minimal – and not long after founded his own bespoke imprint, Unirhythm. The Midwestern Advocates EP Part One is a modern classic, the austerely jacking B-side ‘Chicago Nights’ simply devastating, while this year’s Loneliness ‘Leave Me Alone’ / ‘Razz ’09′ has a more obviously Detroit beatdown flavour.

Caravan Slam Poetry Slam

“Slam. It’s a fairly violent verb. But when teamed with the flowery noun poetry, it takes on a whole new meaning. The Caravan Poetry Slam brings together around 20 local poets, a panel of judges, and a room full of what they hope to be, “open hearts instead of roses, open minds instead of rotten tomatoes.” Anyone can sign up and sacrifice their three-minute slam to the open space. Each poem will be scored and then the top four poets compete in a finalist round to decide the winner. Interactivity is integral, with other elements of ‘Emergency Art’ integrated into the night in the form of written confessionals and ‘coughed up’ soapbox-style Emergency Slams.”

Elzhi (Live and direct from Detroit) Sunday Sept 11th

Grindin’ & The Main Ingredients are pleased to announce the first solo show in Sydney for one of Hip Hop’s most lyrical MC’s live and direct from Detroit, Elzhi.

Elzhi made his international debut on “Come and Get It,” a stand out song from Jay Dee’s (J Dilla) debut album, “Welcome 2 Detroit”. The widespread praise for the track led to Elzhi joining the group Slum Village in 2002. The albums that Elzhi recorded as a member of the group – “Trinity”, “Detroit Deli” and “Slum Village” – have sold more than 600,000 copies and established Slum Village as one of the most respected Hip Hop groups in the world.
